Canning Purba (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is a Legislative Assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district in the Indian State of West Bengal.

Overview[edit]

As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the Delimitation of constituencies in the West Bengal, Canning Purba (Bidhan Sabha constituency) is composed of the following:[1]

  • Deuli I, Deuli II, Kalikatala, Matherdighi, Sarengabad, Tambuldaha I and Tambuldaha II gram panchayats of Canning II community development block
  • Bodra, Chandaneswar I, Chandaneswar II, Durgapur, Sanksahar and Tardah gram panchayats of Bhangar I community development block

Canning Purba (Bidhan Sabha constituency) is a part of No. 19 Jaynagar (Lok Sabha constituency).

Legislative Assembly Elections 1977-2006[edit]

Abdur Razzak Molla of CPI(M) has represented the Canning Purba (Vidhan Sabha constituency) from 1977 to 2006. He defeated his nearest rivals, Amirul Islam of AITC in 2006,[14] Mujibar Rahman Kayal of INC in 2001,[13] Akram Laskar of INC in 1996,[12] Abdus Sattar Molla of INC in 1991,[11] Amar Nath Bandopadhyay of INC in 1987,[10] Ahammad Nuruzzaman of INC in 1982[9] and Osman Gani of INC in 1977.[8][18]

Legislative Assembly Elections 1957-1972[edit]

Gobinda Chandra Naskar of INC won the Canning (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in 1972[7] and 1971.[6] Narayan Naskar of INC won in 1969.[5] A.C.Halder of Bangla Congress won in 1967.[4] Khagendra Nath Naskar of INC won in 1962.[3] In 1957,[2] Canning (Vidhan Sabha constituency) had joint seats. Khagendra Nath Naskar and Abdus Shukur, both of INC, won. The seat did not exist prior to that.

  1. ^ Five constituencies were totally abolished in 2011 in Dakshin 24 Parganas district. These were: Mathurapur, Garden Reach, Dhakuria, Kabitirtha and Alipore. Totally new constituencies created numbered three: Raidighi, Kasba and Metiaburuz. Baruipur (single constituency) was replaced by two new constituencies – Baruipur Purba and Baruipur Paschim. Sonarpur (single constituency) was replaced by two new constituencies – Sonarpur Uttar and Sonarpur Dakshin. Bishnupur (single constituency) replaced two old constituencies – Bishnupur East and Bishnupur West. A number of constituencies were renamed.
