Help talk:IPA

For English words, Wikipedia does use a "normal" pronunciation key. It is Help:Pronunciation respelling key, and may be used in addition to the IPA, enclosed in the {{respell}} template. See the opening sentences of Beijing, Cochineal, and Lepidoptera for a few examples. But even this is not without problems; for example, cum laude would be respelled kuum-LOW-day, but this could easily be misread as koom-LOH-day. English orthographyis simply too inconsistent in regard to its correspondence to pronunciation, and therefore a completely intuitive respelling system is infeasible. This is why our respelling system must be used merely to augment the IPA, not to replace it.

A user suggested to me that we replace our audio samples of the following vowels with RoachPeter's (previous discussion).

See this discussion for some context. FWIW, these other phoneticians' demonstrations[1][2][3] must be of help. There is also this table of vowel formants I extracted from these recordings and some other sources some time ago, though I can't guarantee its accuracy. Plan to make the edit should no one contest in a few days. Nardog (talk) 12:21, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Just realized Roach had also uploaded a falling-pitch version of [ʌ], PR-open-mid back unrounded vowel2.ogg, like the others. I have replaced the version originally discussed, PR-open-mid back unrounded vowel.ogg, with the falling one in the implementation, but if there is any reason to prefer the other one, please discuss. I could use helping confirming my usage of IPA from an experienced user at Talk:Dune (novel)#The wrong IPA for "Atreides" in our Dune articles?. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 06:16, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

I came to the page and other IPA pages hoping to find a way to play the sounds. For example, how do I pronounce kɬʊl.ɬu ? If there is a link which can play the sound we should put it in. Kelly222 (talk) 21:12, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
